getting rid of debian gnome

Is there any clean way to get rid of gnome. When I did
"apt-get install gnome)
it installed a whole bunch of packages.
but when I did
apt-get remove gnome"
it just removed the gnome package.
I tried gnome2 also.
am using sid.
I did look this up in the archives but didn't see a definitive answer.
If I have to take out all the packages by hand, is there a place I can
find a list of the order for doing it without getting a bunch of
dependency complaints. also, I don't want to take out all the dependencies
as I'm using garnome.
Thanks.
