Thanks for your reply. I have most documentation, and have
identified the correct backend. My confusion is that sane does
not show up as being installed when at least parts of it are.
'Man sane', 'man scanimage' and 'man sane-mustek' (the correct
scanner) are available, but 'man xscanimage' is not and it is 
supposed to be part of the sane package. (I do have a copy of
the xscanimage man page from a google search and also the
HOWTO).

I've so far seen nothing which details permission requirements,
and I want to use the scanner as a user, (I rarely log in or
su to root).
