Well i'm a newbiew so just be aware about my advises could not be perfect ok

I think that you need  match you scanner(model, vendor) with the appropriate
sane backend for this you can get the right information on sane web page
http://www.mostang.com/sane/
then you have the right backend you must be sure that is right configured to
debian, so you need read the specific man page for that backend this should
help to find the manpage
man sane -k | grep backend
or wihtout filtering just
man sane -k
so you read and configure the apropiate backend to you, doing this the
xscanimage and other fronted programs that use the scanner must have no
problem.
