editor or $EDITOR.

"The little brother's database" (lbdb) hooks nicely into mutt ('set
query_command="lbdbq %s"') and supports a number of modules on the
backend.  Perhaps you would want to approach it from that angle?

It should (pulls the relevant information from /etc/passwd).  Are you
doing anything fancy with headers?

I do not use imap, but filtering per maillist is essential.
read/no-read decisions for me is mainly based on subjects of a given
thread, which I then ^D or read.  If I get tired of killing something
manually (like virus announcements, or platform specific stuff like
alpha, pcc, windows) then I create a procmail filter to toss it
automatically.
