Webcam Hardware and Software Advice Request

Hi,

I want to connect a USB webcam to my home PC which runs Debian Woody (3.0) kernel 2.4.18

Which webcam would you advise me? I don't need a super quality and expensive system, all I want is
a system that I can set up with minimal hassle.

I've read an article (http://www.aboutdebian.com/webcam.htm) which tells

about IBM "PC Camera" or
Xirlink C-It models. As I examined my module list with modconf I can see

that these models are supported
USB devices on my Debian. However these articles: http://www.linux-usb.org/ibmcam/ and http://www.qbik.ch/usb/devices/showdev.php?id=70 have some negative comments about IBM and Xirlink
on Linux.

I've also found this site: http://www.smcc.demon.nl/webcam/

As you can see I'm cofused a little bit. I hope some experienced camera users can show me the right way.

I want to use this cam for motion detection and I found this software: http://www.turbolinux.com.cn/~merlin/mvc/
I'd also be glad if you know similar alternatives for Debian.

Thanks in advance.
