Thanks for all the help.  Based on the advice given, I am reading the 
material available linked by the procmail, postfix, exim, etc. websites.  I 
will take a closer look at sendmail as well.  I want to understand email at 
all levels and from all povs.  I would like to eventually understand the 
nuances of the various tools as well.

My first practical, baby-step concern is if I will be able to maintain my 
working KMail configuration while I try out combinations of uni-purpose mail 
tools.
