I tried to install Gnome today with: apt-get install gdm apt-get install gnome-core gdm works. With gdm I can get into KDE but not Gnome. Any hints?
Sorry, no.
With kdm, when I start tvm there is still a bunch of kde stuff running (as seen with "ps axj"). So kdm has got to go.Depends on what you mean by "any good". It's usually what I use. Fairly lightweight, but with the bells and whistles I like (taskbar, that autohides). How 'bout ice? IS it any good?
The installation notes at the ice web site are above my level of comprehension. (Am barely X literate.) Is there an easy way to get it running?
"apt-get install icewm" "/etc/init.d/kdm restart"should do it. Then just select "icewm" from the pull-down menu on the kdm login screen. It might be that you'll have to create/edit ~/.xinitrc and add "icewm" and then choose "default" or "Debian" from the pull-down; I just don't remember.
