less problems

I have the foll. problem with "less". When it scrolls down, it just 
writes the lower part of my monitor (the upmost few inches are left 
untouchet); then when I want to scroll back, the uppermost part of the 
text results tu be hidden.

I guess it has to do with framebuffers; but what is to be done?
