I've got a Del Optiplex GX260 with a USB mouse. When I boot up, gpm starts before the USB mouse driver stuff kicks in, therefore gpm doesn't see the mouse. After I get logged in, I can then run "/etc/init.d/gpm restart" and the mouse works just fine.

How do I go about getting the mouse driver working before gpm starts? Is it just a matter of re-ordering the gpm script in /etc/rc2.d, or is there a more "proper" way, or what?

That's weird, gpm starts up *after* my USB drivers get loaded. Are you
using `hotplug'?
rob@ooder> ls -1 *{hotplug,gpm}
S11hotplug@
S20gpm@

Yes, I'm using "hotplug".

westk[@garciajo]:/etc/rc2.d> ls
S10sysklogd  S14ppp   S20gpm      S20ssh     S21nfs-common  S89cron
S11hotplug   S20exim  S20inetd    S20xfs     S23ntp-simple  S99rmnologin
S11klogd     S20fam   S20makedev  S20xprint  S89atd         S99xdm

westk[@garciajo]:/etc/init.d> ls -l *{hotplug,gpm}
-rwxr-xr-x    1 root     root         1473 Feb 11 13:36 gpm
-rwxr-xr-x    1 root     root         1771 Apr 12 08:58 hotplug
