Also won't for me (no sshd)

Found this, and have a problem almost exactly like it.

Subject: sshd simply fails to start

Hello.
Hope this is the correct newsgroup to post on.
Thought I might go to a distro specific site
first, 'cos intuition tells me this might
be a distro specific thing.

Right -

sshd wont start.
Just wont.
Doesn't ditch with error messages when I try
to start it from the command line.

It _will_ start if I start it in debug mode.

only loggin I could find was in
/var/log/auth.log:
error: setsockopt SO_KEEPALIVE: Socket operation on non-socket
Feb 7 14:39:14 queenmab sshd[2715]: warning: can't get client address:
Socket operation on non-socket
Feb 7 14:41:34 queenmab sshd[2723]: error: setsockopt SO_KEEPALIVE:
Socket operation on non-socket
Feb 7 14:41:34 queenmab sshd[2723]: warning: can't get client address:
Socket operation on non-socket
Feb 7 14:42:14 queenmab sshd[2728]: fatal: daemon() failed: Function not
implemented

Im running debian 3,
2.2.20-idepci kernel from the download cd.

How do I track the cause of this problem?

And if the sshd program is trying to 'do a socket operation on
a non-socket', how do I find out _what_ it's trying to do the
operation on?

thanks

In my case, I also see that when sshd doesn't start, it does so SILENTLY
with no warning at all. NOT GOOD. This isn't really acceptable for a
serious program on a serious platform like Debian. I *challenge* the
package maintainer to fix this SEVERE blemish in sshd.

In my case I see this message in /var/log/auth.log:

sshd [<pid>]: fatal: daemon() failed: Success.

Hahaha. Gotta love those programmer debugging glitches: when a complete
program failure prints out a message that ends in "Success". This would
make Bill proud.

Love ssh. NEED ssh. Cannot believe that the single greatest program I use
on Debian is the one that's broken.

Version is current Woody, that's 3.4p1-1, running on Woody 3.0r1 with
custom kernel ~2.4.20.

So: sshd never starts, except when run from the tty with the -d (debug)
flag.

Any help? I have to leave town and have to have this machine up and
listening for ssh in a few HOURS.

  Please help.
