Err, I forgot to mention :
run a
sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xfree86
and tell it not to control your XF86Config-4, and this shouldn't be
necessary anymore.
Certainly it is always advisable to have a proper backup scheme,
though, so you could just as well continue ;)
