What's the modem manufacturer and type? Does it use pppoe or dhcp, does
it act as a modem/router or only a modem?

For example, I use an SMC Networks modem which has both an USB and an
ethernet port. RJ45 with dhcp as bridge is easiest to set up (you don't
have to do anything) and for USB, well, pray that the hardware is
supported...
