In make menuconfig:

ATA/IDE/MFM/RLL support ---> IDE, ATA and ATAPI Block devices --->
CMD64X and CMD680 chipset support (you have to scroll down to see it)

That's for 2.4.20; other kernels are unlikely to be sufficiently
different that you can't work it out. :-)

(BTW your above post came to me via debian-news-request, not
debian-user, which I find peculiar!)
