Yes:  getting familiar with recompiling kernels etc.

You say that there's two features you need, and that the stock kernels
available to you only support one or the other.  Sounds exactly like
the sort of situation in which one compiles a custom kernel.  Especially
since the stock kernels have all sorts of hardware support that you
probably *don't* need.
