I think QT will run either with fontconfig (strictly speaking its libXft 
calling libfontconfig calling libfreetype), or use the x-server font serving 
if fontconfig is not there.  If you don't have the debian "fontconfig" 
package installed then the stuff about /etc/fonts is a red herring.
