Just installed Knoppix after running redhat/mandrake/suse fulltime for 2 years on my home pc, and have always wanted to try debian. I have a fairly fresh install here, I have run a apt-get update and the apt-get dist-upgrade after updating kde I have run into a problem where if I log out to change to root X is freezing and also samba is no longer accessible. The only thing that is currently working is to reboot the machine. Not sure where to begin looking to solve this one. I did do a google search for the subject line and didn't find anything usefull there. My understanding of Knoppix is that it is "loosely" based on Debian, and is a mix of Stable, Testing, and Unstable.any ideas out there is this a common problem for debian newbies? I suspect that Knoppix uses a special runlevel other than 2 to start X. Look in /etc/inittab to see what the default runlevel is. If it's anything other than 2, look in /etc/rcX.d, where X is the number of the default runlevel, for the problem. Also if that's the case, you may find that the difference between a normal Debian installation and a Knoppix installation may be great enough to cause headaches for some time to come. I just don't know one way or the other, but it's something to keep in mind.
