Hi Wm,
two programs come to mind:
gimp for photo editing
scribus for desktop publishing .
Linux has programs for vector drawing (sodipodi,sketch), word
processing(open office). There are many more depending upon your need.
Ask the list for specific tasks you  would like to do and we will
recommend other programs.
