I buy all my computers from newegg.com. They have great prices, an
no-hassle return policy, and tons of products. I am not sure if they ship
to the UK, but shipping in the states is more than reasonable.
For instance I just put together a machine with an Antec case, LiteOn CDRW,
Floppy, Maxtor 7200rpm 40GB, Maxtor 7200rpm 120GB, 512 Mushkin Memory, MSI
MB w/ Nforce Chipset, Athlon XP 2600. Total price: $689 Not a bad price,
great machine, and not lining MS's pockets. The thing I like best about
home made machines is you can get exactly the parts you want and not have to
worry about getting some cheapo Hard Drive that is thrown into the machine
by the company putting it together.
If you have trouble doing this yourself, buy some local geek a case of beer,
or some Tai food or whatever he/she is into, and chances are they will give
you a hand putting this together.
If you do end up going the pre-built pc w/windows, just google for "windows
refund" and you should find plenty of advice from people who have sought a
refund for the OS.
