Well, hurd is not Linux, it is a distro based on GNU Hurd kernel. I
don't think that is what you have in mind (Debian works not just with
Linux kernel, but also with other ones likde BSDs and Hurd).
Then, you have sarge, sid, woody and potato. potato is outdated so
forget it. the remainings are sid, sarge, and woody.
Debian has 3 releases. Stable which currently is woody, testing which
currently is sarge, and unstable which is sid. It depends on you which
one to grab, but for installation and specially because you are a new
user, I strongly advice you to go with woody which is stable. It was
released last in 2002 (in may I guess but I am too lazy to prove). So
you might find some of it's applications slighly outdated, like XFree
4.1 and KDE 2.2 and Gnome 1.4.
Of course Debian is not like RedHat, so you don't have to reinstall in
order to upgrade. You can start with woody, and then if you find that
you want some more bleading edge packages, you can easily upgrade your
whole system wit apt on the fly, without rebooting, or reinstalling.
Bottom line: Go for woody and install it, if you later see the need for
newer applications, you can simply upgrade to sarge or even sid, easily
using apt.
Cheers
