Im running 512 megs with 98, so you are wrong, its actually 1 gig.

Very true.  Note, though, that XFree drivers for some old video cards
weren't ported from v3.x to v4.x.

Thus, you use XFree v4.x in svga mode, or v3.3.6 and the drivers for
your card, and that limits the amount of new GUI apps you can use w/o
backporting or recompiling.

Even fvwm 2.2 in sarge is compiled against XFree 4.1, so it would
have to be recompiled for XFree 3.3.6.

Don't forget RAM!  Win9x only supports 256MB, and while old desktop
systems don't have that much RAM, if/when you do decide to upgrade
to something less old, you'll also have to shell out for WinXP.

With Linux, just move the HDD(s) from oldbox to newbox, and all is 
ok (as long as you've compiled support for both chipsets into the
kernel).
