I am not 100% sure, but I think that fonts are only used through the X 
server (xlib does only send a request to it and waits for its answer). 
So your old app does only have to contain xlib code that is compatible 
with X11 protocol, which merely does!

You have to take care of the order of FontPath lines in your XF86Config.
