/dev/input/mice

I'm trying to configure X, and one of the problems I stumble into, is 
the following. I have a ps2 mouse. Xf86config has written in the file 
XF86Config that corresponding device is /dev/input/mice. But, when I 
execute startx, I get a message saying that /dev/input/mice does not 
exist. Same with /dev/input/mouse0. Nevertheless such devices do exist, 
 at least so says the command ls /dev/input.
Do I have to try /dev/input/mouse? until I find the right device? Do ps2 
mice correspond to other devices?
