I haven't used this package, so I don't precisely how it's supposed to
work.

I would guess, though, that you should edit /etc/inittab and change the
/sbin/getty invocations to /sbin/mgetty.

If there is a Debian Way, I would guess that it uses the alternatives
system, and that using 'update-alternatives --config getty' would set
/sbin/getty to be an indirect symlink to mgetty.  If it's not that, is
there a README.Debian?  If neither that, then i'd say that manually
editing /etc/inittab is the way to go.

Again, these are my guesses.  Initially I would have guessed (like you)
that the process would be more automatic.  Perhaps a wishlist bug?  Read
the docs first and see if there's something we're missing: maybe
some good instructions on how to replace getty with mgetty, maybe
rationale for not doing it automatically, maybe both.
