are you using ROCKRIDGE ? I think rockridge supports up to 255 characters.
note that the OS that will read the CD must support rockridge, which is
pretty much UNIX/linux hosts only. for some reason MS never included such
support in their OSs so filenames appear as being mangled there.

joliet may support 255 characters too but for unix filenames rockridge is
much more flexible(supports multiple periods, and preserves
ownership/permissions)

(and just incase, rockridge and joliet are ISO9660 extensions both are
supported by mkisofs)
