If you're logged into X as root, rather than just SUed, you end up with
a lot more that can potentially go wrong, since any of the X apps you
run can do anything to the system... it doesn't happen often, but it's
always best to limit the damage that you can do to things.

Anyway, it's easier to type sudo whatever, then to log out, log back in
as root, log out again, and repeat until things are working right,
