It is completely dependent upon the particular version of the kernel you are running but generally the sound drivers are modular. You probably do need to load the driver for them. > The SB Live board works fine with Windows, but it would appear that > there's some issue detecting it at boot time with linux, resulting > in a message about modprobe: Can't locate module char-major-14 in > the syslog, and when KDE starts up, "Sound server informational > message: Error while initializing the sound driver: device /dev/dsp > can't be opened (No such device)" I recommend using 'modconf' as in the following: modconf Then page down to here and select it by pressing enter. kernel/drivers/sound/emu10k1 Then at this page select 'emu10k1' emu10k1 + (No description available) This will set up all of the configuration you need if you have the SB Live in your machine. > The device of course does exist, I added myself to the audio group, > chmodmodprobe: Can't locate module char-major-14-ed it (666) etc, no joy. Just to confirm, currently Debian does not autodetect anything. There is not any automatic device detection such as in most other systems. The next version of Debian has a full project devoted specifically to this issue. In the meantime, using modconf works pretty well. Bob
