I like Nate's idea. Then install aptitude. Use it to browse the X11 section
and install the stuff you want. aptitude will pull in the dependencies.

Debian is *very* GNOME-centric. As a practical matter you won't be able to
rid your system completely of it, even if you use KDE for everything.
