Confused state of my system

I'm still trying to rid anything gnome and/or gtk-related from my system
and have gotten very, very confused with something ! At this point,
there's nothing returned from "dpkg --get-selections | grep gnome". I do
get a few results from "dpkg --get-selections | grep gtk" though. So, I
try and do this

apt-get remove --purge libgtk*

and packages such as the following will be removed with it:

kdeadmin*
kdelibs
kdelibs-bin

and many more which make NO sense.

Also scheduled to go are these:

mpeglib*
mtr
secpolicy
timidity

I don't know why those are included either (though mtr may have a gtk
version).

I could just let it go and make note of the packages I want back (which
I've done at this point -- took notes, that is).

Why's it doing this ??

Thanks
Hall
