These days the standard Debian kernel images come with pretty much
everything enabled by default so that people shouldn't have to have this
problem, and there's a good bit of work being done on prepackaged kernel
modules for the newer ALSA sound system as well. I'm afraid I've lost
the post where you said what sound card you had, though, so I can't
check in detail.
