Thanks for letting me know about that. I don't understand how that would
make the difference, so I'll look into it.

I went into etc/bash_completion and commented the entire line for xmms. I
was able to use tab completion for the filenames, as I had suggested:
xmms /path/to/mp3/a_few_letters<tab>
and completion worked just fine.
I'm glad you fixed your problem. I need to look more into completion.
