Reinstall with another type of root filesystem.

I use JFS and Reiserfs, and I haven't had them fail yet (but I've heard
stories of filesystems being trashed).

When you compile your kernel, be sure you build in support for both the hard
drive and the root filesystem (then you can blow off initrd).
