I use gphoto2 for my needs, the version with woody is compadible
with quite a few cameras
apt-get install gphoto2
gphoto2 --list-cameras
I use the kodak DC3400(2.0MP)
I do compile my own kernels, so I can't speak for compadiblity in
the default kernel(for my camera I just need usbdevfs support which
is not the same as devfs, works in 2.2.x and 2.4.x)
