Whilst not exactly answering your question, I asked a similar question a 
little while ago because I have lvm and couldn't get at them from the 
standard boot floppies and it was suggested -  "Why don't you boot from CD?" 
Since most modern bios'es now support this.

I have a CD burner so ...

... now I have a CD rescue kit that means I don't really need floppies.
