'make-kpkg kernel-image; sudo dpkg -i ../*.deb' does the equivalent of
'make modules_install', among other things.  /etc/init.d/modutils will
run 'depmod -a -p' for you at boot time; I don't think there's a
particular need to run 'update-modules' when you install a new kernel.
