X and all applications continue to run.
With the default settings you can switch back to  X with <CTRL><ALT><F7>.

A sidenote.
Usually, there is no need to switch to a text-console, since X provides a
lot of it's own. Eg. xterm, eterm, rxvt, kterm and others.
