I'm afraid I seem to have lost the helpful reply, so can't give personal
thanks to the person who suggested 'M-x unrmail' and 'cat unrmail_file >>
/var/spool/mail/me' but it worked. As for locking the spool file, I
simply went offline while I was messing with it!
