When I invoked vim with various terminal settings such as:
$ vim -T dumb <filename>
$ vim -T vt100 <filename>
$ vim -T xterm <filename>
$ vim <filename>
I noticed different behaviors. I'd suggest trying various settings to see
which works as you want it to. It could just be that vim doesn't treat
gnome-terminal or konsole the same as an xterm, whether by design or by
omission.
