XMMS doesn't play streaming audio

I'd like to use XMMS to play streaming audio from the net.

When I press <Ctrl-L> and type in a URL, I very briefly get a message about buffering in the title area; this is replaced by the URL.

But no sound.

On other occasions I don't even get the "buffering" message. Nothing. If I press the Play button I get the "which directory to play music from" dialog.

I can play MP3s from my hard drive, and I can play CDs.

The behavior is the same if I connect directly to my DSL ISP as it is behind my router/firewall, so firewall isn't the issue.

A friend of mine has a computer shop with DSL access through a different ISP. At the shop he has an iMac which streams music just fine, but XMMS won't work for me from there, either.

What else should I try?

Kevin
