Had the same problem before. In my case, I solve it by upgrading XFree86
4.10 to 4.2.1-3.

I have got it all working. Gnome 2.2 Kicks A$$, thanks for all your help. I will return the favor by helping others. Gnome is working greate and I have not had a single lock up since.
