And did you 'make modules' and 'make modules_install' ?
The modules should be located in /lib/modules/<kernel version>/...
(seek for kernel/ide directory or something like that...)

If they aren't there :
you haven't properly installed (or even compiled) them...
	

If they are there :
run 'update-modules' and 'depmod'

then you can load module with 'modprobe <module name>'
and unload with 'rmmod <module name>'

if you want module to be loaded at startup put it's name
into '/etc/modules' file


No need for 'modconf' :)
