If you've got the right software, i.e. a kernel that supports ext3,
up-to-date util-linux package (see this page,
http://www.zip.au/~akpm/linux/ext3/ext3-usage.html, for full info), etc,
etc, all it takes is

tune2fs -j /dev/hdXX
