I am not aware of a full replacement.

I saw an article written by some Ximian guys in a Linux magazine dated
February 2003. Didn't buy it though. It didn't seem to include exact
HOW-TO do it, neither whether the solution was 100% working. But it
seemed like a good start. I remember openLDAP was mentioned in the
article. Can't say more as I didn't spend more than 30 secs on it.
I have to go back to the book store to find the exact reference.

I found that on the web, seems outdated, and I am sure you found this
before:
