You either want to kill artsd or do an: artsshell suspend; quake3.
The second one would just suspend the sound server (rather than kill it) which 
will then be re-enabled when you exit the game and have a sound played.
Using artsdsp to pipe the sound through arts would work as well, but is quite 
laggy.

Do you have any output from the console?
Might be corrupt quake data files, or your X or Quake display configuration.
