I would simplify; drop out of X; make sure there's no sound daemons running (arts, esound, etc), then try playing an ogg/mp3 with splay or something similar. If that works, you know the hardware is okay. Then move on to a simpler wm, like icewm; still make sure there are no sound daemons running, and try xmms. If that works, then move on to KDE and suspect something with arts.
