Hmm. I can see a package called cracklib2 in the repository (password
validation or somesuch) but I don't have it installed. I also have X,
KDE and Gnome installed and working (I'm running testing, i.e. Sarge).

I can also download the package just fine from

http://packages.debian.org/testing/utils/cracklib2.html

by clicking on the "Go To Download Page" button. I assume that apt-get
would also install it but, since I don't wish to do so, I haven't tried.

Have you tried using tasksel to install X? It's very useful for things
like that.
