This could be related to DPMS. It may help to disable the DPMS option
in /etc/X11/XF86Config-4.

Eventually, your monitor doesn't like the video frequencies it gets
when you switch back from the console and automatically turns off to
protect against damage. The video timings and frequencies may be
different from XF 3.x to XF 4.x, thus you don't encounter the problem
with XF 3.x.

Start up X11 in a lower resolution/with lower frequencies and try
switching to check wheather the problem persists --- or try another
monitor if you've one at hand. Alternatively, try turning the monitor
completely off manually and turn it back on when it has lost the
signal to see if it would make a picture after switching.
