OT: MPG-to-AVI or AVI-to-AVI software

Hello.

I've been trying to find a program which would allow me to convert from MPG to 
AVI or recompress an AVI movie but I haven't found any that works for me.  I 
need a program that can compress using DivX 4 codec (DivX 5 won't work) for 
use with the PocketDivx player.

I've tried to use Mencoder with no luck... The player won't play any AVI files 
made with that encoder.

I would appreciate any suggestions you could give me.
