Hmmm, interesting.  My USB mouse works without using hid.o:

mousedev                4340   1
hid                    14120   0 (unused)
serial                 46500   0 (autoclean)
usb-uhci               23436   0 (unused)

BTW,  I'm using customized 2.4.20 kernel.
