I did a CS degree, graduated in 2000, and am now programming for a
living. I've been using Debian for about three or four years, though,
and was talking to lots of people who know what they're talking about
before I became a developer; that kind of thing over a long period of
time tends to sharpen your abilities.
I would say that the second of your guesses (hobbyism over time) has
done quite a bit more for my knowledge of Debian than my career has.
