The following works for me:

  mount -t vfat /dev/hde1 /mnt/flash

I'm not sure, but I think the flash disk might have to be present when
you boot up.

The flash disk was sold preformatted with vfat, though you can reformat
it with ext2:

  mkfs /dev/hde1
